SUMMER FRIDAYS IN THE CITY

On a Friday after our move to the suburbs, Ira and I rented a hotel room in New York City and made plans with friends that we hadn’t seen in over a year. We met a friend on our hotel rooftop at 4:00 p.m. and enjoyed delightful summer cocktails against a backdrop of the most spectacular city views. It was busy but not crowded; it was loud, boisterous, and ridiculously happy in a way that I’ve only experienced on post-work summer Fridays in New York City. I think it’s the excitement of feeling free, purposeful, and alive in one of the most interesting cities in the world (in my humble opinion, of course). Most people who live in New York City aren’t originally from there, and the energy and enthusiasm for their adopted home is visceral.

Even now, when I no longer have a traditional job to escape from at 1:00 p.m. on Fridays, I find few things as magical as the (sometimes) chic debauchery of a fancy New York rooftop when it’s eighty degrees outside. There’s this stark opposition of concrete, high-rise buildings, and rushing people to the relaxing summer vibe of being thirty floors above it all while sipping a beautiful libation and eating mouthwatering nibbles (that cost more than dinner anywhere else in the country. But I digress).

While many people escape the city during the summer, Ira and I have always been so fond of it. It’s less busy, the pace is slower, and there seems to be more available green space in many areas. (Some friends strongly disagree and insist that summer in the city is stuffy, smells like hot garbage, and becomes unbearable. But we are not focusing on those friends right now.)

Back to this particular summer evening. After a slight delay at the bar, our gorgeous bartender offered us a complimentary round of drinks. Actually, the bartender didn’t offer them so much as graciously brought them over to our table without consent. Considering that we were wrapping up to head to an event farther downtown, we set out to find other friendly rooftop-goers to give them to. Cocktails on an NYC rooftop are not inexpensive and so the gratitude extended from this offer was palpable. We were thrilled, the receivers of the drinks were happy, and off we went, in the same jovial spirit in which we’d arrived a few hours prior.
